Developed in the 1920’s Florida land boom by George Merrick, the City of Coral Gables is over two miles long, but is just four blocks wide. The city’s architectural style is Spanish, and includes the Coral Gables Congregational Church, and the Catholic Church of the Little Flower. By 1926 the city covered an area of 10,000 acres.
The main artery bisects the business district and Merrick used to boast that every business in the city was less than a two block walk. There is now a free circulator trolley system which runs down Ponce de Leon Boulevard, and the city is home to the University of Miami which was constructed in 1925 on 240 acres land near US Route 1. The city is pedestrian friendly and boasts over 140 gourmet restaurants and shops, among them many well-known international names.
The population of Coral Gables is now just over 50,000, and places of interest include the Venetian Pool, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the Miracle Mile, Coral Way, Coral Museum, and the Biltmore Hotel. Quite a long list of notable people live, or have lived in Coral Gables, including Jeb Bush 43rd Governor of Florida, pop singer Jose Jose, Roy Sekoff, the founding editor of Huffington Post, and Pamela Smart, convicted of the first degree murder of her husband Gregory which took place on May 1st 1990. When she was arrested on August 1st that year she was visited in her office by Detective Daniel Pelletier who said to her “Well Pam, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we have solved the murder of your husband. The bad news is that you’re under arrest!”
